Quote of the Month

“What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like.” — St. Augustine

President’s Corner

The drought is over!  New Eve Trivia Night is back!  And back by popular demand.  This time at St. Bridget in Berryville. So don’t be square.  Reserve your round table now by emailing me at [email protected] before they all fill up.  It’s more fun than two houses full of babies.

So what’s happening at our full houses?

Our recent resident mother Amanda Burrell has turned another corner in the turnaround of her life.  After joining Sacred Heart of Jesus Church earlier this year, Amanda has now graduated from the Northwest Regional Adult Recovery Court.

The New Eve family is really happy for Amanda and proud of her.  Many of us attended Amanda’s graduation ceremony where every graduate thanked God for helping them.  Amanda thanked God and also New Eve for helping her through the darkness.  We give credit to Amanda for her own strength and determination and her reliance on God.  Our spiritual counselor Sharon Watkins sponsored Amanda into the Church and deserves much credit.  Our board member Dr. Cyril Barch and his wife Jean took Amanda and baby Aiden into their home for several months and provided much love and support.  Amanda is now working part time for New Eve as our Operations Director coordinating and working on home projects.

We enjoy recalling and thanking God for the many success stories of our New Eve mothers.  We have celebrated and praised them at each positive accomplishment, no matter how small.  Small positive steps are very big steps for most of our mothers.

New Eve is now sheltering six mothers and seven children.  We are also sheltering three unborn babies!  So our Director Christina Muller, Assistant Director Dianne Barkey, and our volunteers are very busy.  Our Tuesday evening seminars continue to be a cornerstone of the “New Eve program” which is so much more than just housing.  Recent topics have been women role models in scripture, the effects of marijuana on the fetus, Music with Children, Mommy and Me Music Class, and “Technology the New Addiction.”  To their credit, our mothers have also asked for seminars on subjects such as saving for their children and life insurance.  That’s gratifying because our mentors encourage them to think about their future.  We have put much emphasis on mentoring and having a mentor for each mother.  And our volunteer case manager Lisa McGrath works closely with each mother to help them find child care, resources, benefits, and health care.

Thanks to my Brother Knights of Columbus and the Father Krempa Soup Kitchen for donating, moving, and installing a top of the line refrigerator for one of our homes.  The Knights and an increasing number of men continue to perform many tasks and projects at our two homes.  There is never a shortage of repairs and projects, and our volunteers—both men and certainly women—save New Eve a lot of money.  Would you like to be a volunteer?  Or a mentor?  Please call us at 540-450-0775.

Trail Life boys and their leaders have been busy all summer with lawn mowing and landscaping, and New Life Christian Church members have also helped us with landscaping.  We strive to keep our houses a beautiful and tranquil environment for our mothers and children.

We are pleased to have added three new members to our Board of Directors this year:
  • Sherry Riley, R.N. Care Connections of Virginia;
  • Melanie Hitchen, wealth advisor TDC Virginia;
  • Beth Schloemer, Vice President Coventry Group.
Melanie and her husband Peter adopted New Eve baby Elena seven years ago (Elena knows all about it), and Beth is a daughter of New Eve founder Joanne Seale.  New Eve Board members provide excellent wisdom and stewardship.

This fall our baby bottle campaigns are returning to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church Catholic Church and St. Bridget of Ireland Catholic Church and to a new partner Trinity Episcopal Church in Upperville, VA.  So please take a bottle and fill it with cash and checks.

Thank you for your prayers, your encouragement, and your financial support.  Please continue to pray.  Our mothers know you are praying for them and providing for them, and they are thankful.

God bless you,

Cabell
